The Rise of the Night Market

Have you noticed a sudden popularity in Night Markets here in the US? From HUGE night markets like the Uptown Night Market in New York or the 626 Night Market in California, to the smaller more intimate markets randomly emerging likely a few miles from wherever you are, the Asian inspired Night Market is booming in 2021.

Asian Inspiration

Whereas Western countries are very familiar with the idea of a farmer’s market or a flea market, night markets have a flavor of their own. Inspired by the popular night markets of East and Southeast Asia, the intended purpose and pacing of a night market is different from, say, a farmer’s market. When shoppers visit a farmer’s market, they generally have a particular objective, usually grocery shopping for fresh ingredients. Once you fulfill that objective, there’s really no reason to stick around, save for some kettle corn or local live music.

Night Markets are usually filled with many vendors serving food out of their booths, with various ways to enjoy their hand crafted meals.

The beauty of night markets is that the only objective is to have a nice leisurely stroll with a few cheap snacks to munch on and maybe some boba tea in a light bulb to enjoy at your own pace. More often at a night market, you’ll see friends and family hanging out at a makeshift table, couples enjoying each others’ company sitting on a sidewalk curb, friendly faces aimlessly walking looking for a craving they didn’t even know they had.

It’s All About The Food

And of course, there’s the food! There aren’t many places in America to get authentic Asian street food, unless you’re really lucky. If you’ve been looking for a place to find incredible Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Filipino, or any other Asian food, night markets will have what you are looking for. Not only do night markets aim to support small yet ambitious local vendors, they have a penchant for hosting the best Asian food you could find near you.

It’s no surprise that night markets are on the rise. As society gradually opens up again, everyone is likely to have pent up urge to travel, shop, and most importantly eat. Having access to new flavors from around the globe is more than anyone could ask for in 2021.

So take advantage of this amazing new trend and go out to experience new horizons! From what we’ve seen, most night markets are doing everything they can to regulate the traffic with the shoppers’ safety in mind. There’s so much amazing food out there to try, and so much of it can actually be found at these night markets. We’re definitely excited to check some of these markets out!
